TextEdit is included with OS X.

You can change it to Plain Text (Format > Make Plain Text) for non-RTF text editing, or make Plain Text the default (Preferences > Format).

If you want simple text editing, use TextEdit.

For code editing, one of the best choices is TextMate.

As already stated, TextEdit is the notepad of OS X (although a more powerful notepad that is). For more advanced stuff, TextMate (already recommended) is very nice. A nice free and famous alternative is Bare Bones's TextWrangler.

You can do pretty much with either. Excel for mac 2011; insert text line.

FYI - you can default TextEdit to plain text when it opens:

Goto preferences
Under Format, click on 'Plain Text'

Can't believe it took me this long to figure that out

Editra for Mac is simple, free, open-source, highly configurable. All in all, it's my favorite Windows Notepad replacement for the Mac.

I recommend Textmate, that works out-of-the-box just like notepad, plus you can activate (if you wish) more and more functions.

I'm looking for the most simple, stable offline text editor for ChromeOS. Something equivalent to Notepad for Windows or TextEdit for Mac.

I've tried Google Keep and Memo; I did not particularly care for either.

The #1 Must-have feature for me is: That the program auto-saves to the LOCAL SSD constantly - such that, if the tab/window is closed accidentally.. My text is still there when I return.

The reason I ask for the version is because there is a documented issue with printing graphics inserted in text boxes in a Word 2011 for Mac and a possible workaround and I wanted to check with you if that may be the issue you're facing.
